Wyeth, one of the world's largest research-driven pharmaceutical
and health care products companies, wanted to strengthen security
and boost productivity within the high-performance data center
serving its advanced research group. This study shows how
DirectControl enabled them to migrate away from a Sun ONE-based
LDAP account system to a more secure, centralized, Active
Directory-based solution. "We've saved several hours a week in our
group that were previously spent doing password resets, directory
server maintenance, and other tasks," observes Wyeth's David
Kennamer. "We're able to spend that time on improving services and
enabling new capabilities for the scientists."

Strengthen security and eliminate end-user frustration
with non-intrusive, Active Directory-centric single sign-on for
SAP

Thousands of organizations worldwide rely on the SAP ERP system
for their daily business needs. If SAP is deployed on Windows
Server, Microsoft Active Directory can be easily configured to
centrally manage user authentication and access control. However,
when SAP is deployed on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris or various Linux
distributions, end-users are often required to enter their
credentials every time they access it. They may even have multiple
SAP usernames and passwords to access different modules owned by
separate business units within their organization.

In such environments, end-users, corporate IT managers, and SAP
administrators feel the pain every day. End-users, frustrated by
having so many usernames and passwords to remember, may write their
login info down so they can refer to it later, exposing the company
to security breaches should these details fall into the wrong
hands. Administrators are burdened with provisioning and
de-provisioning accounts, and for resetting passwords and managing
account lockouts. SAP represents one more group of identities that
needs to be managed locally, requiring labor-intensive
administration that can compromise security. Without centralized
management of user accounts and identity policies such as the
password policy, regulatory compliance is also more difficult to
achieve.

In this free webinar, Corey Williams, Centrify Director of
Product Management, explains how Centrify DirectControl for SAP
addresses these challenges by leveraging your existing Active
Directory infrastructure to deliver single sign-on and centralized
identity management for your SAP ERP system.

Leverage Active Directory for secure and cost-effective
single sign-on and federation for Apache, WebLogic, JBoss and
WebSphere applications

Every day, users at companies of all types and sizes rely on web
and Java applications for critical business functions. While their
Windows login enables them to seamlessly access Microsoft
IIS-hosted applications, they are frequently challenged to log in
again - with a different user name and password - when accessing
applications hosted on non-Microsoft application servers.

Applications running on Apache, WebLogic, JBoss, and WebSphere
have traditionally required additional authentication and identity
stores that are inefficient and expensive to manage and pose
security risks due to gaps in maintaining and deprovisioning
accounts. Complying with SOX, HIPAA, PCI, and other government and
industry regulations is also more difficult. Enterprise efficiency
is impacted as well, with IT constantly provisioning and resetting
passwords. Moreover, external users and partners cannot participate
in federated scenarios.

Join Corey Williams, Centrify Director of Product Management for
this free webinar to learn how Centrify DirectControl for Web
Applications addresses these challenges by seamlessly integrating
your non-Microsoft applications into your existing Active Directory
domain.

Learn how to leverage Microsoft Active Directory to
replace NIS with a secure, centralized solution for authentication
and access control.

Sun Microsystem's Network Information Services (NIS and NIS+)
has been widely used for years to manage Linux and UNIX identity
information within a networked environment. However, NIS has proven
unable to comply with ever-tightening IT security and auditing
requirements being imposed by SOX, HIPAA, PCI and other government
and industry regulations. It also has several manageability
shortcomings and this, combined with Sun's end-of-life announcement
for NIS, has IT organizations looking for solutions.

In this free webinar, Mike Patnode, Centrify's VP of Technology,
shows you how Centrify DirectControl can enable you to leverage
your existing Active Directory infrastructure to replace NIS with a
solution that meets regulatory requirements and streamlines your IT
infrastructure and operations in the process.

Using DirectSecure, organizations can prevent unauthorized access to computing resources and data, improve regulatory compliance, and have optimal, policy-driven protection against network attacks for mixed Windows and UNIX/Linux environments.

“Dynamic data centers contain a mix of Windows servers, UNIX and Linux servers, and virtual servers, which going forward will increasingly extend their reach out to services hosted in multiple cloud provider data centers, said Phil Schacter, VP and Service Director, Burton Group. “Policy-based access controls and secure connections are a key requirement to protect sensitive business information and systems.”

DirectSecure leverages an enterprise’s existing Active Directory infrastructure and extends Microsoft's Server and Domain Isolation technology to UNIX and Linux systems — whether they are physical, virtual or in the cloud. DirectSecure also enables Microsoft® Windows® 7 users to take advantage of the Windows DirectAccess feature to securely access non-Microsoft systems and provides end-to-end encryption and security for those connections.

Organizations can use DirectSecure to ensure that sensitive data such as financial transactions or credit card data is inaccessible to anyone but authorized users connecting through trusted computers. This results in higher levels of protection against internal or external threats — even in situations where the attacker has a valid username and password. Unlike network hardware-based methods, DirectSecure uses a host-based software approach, ensuring security policies are enforced regardless of the server’s location or application protocol. Utilizing the native IPsec support built into today’s UNIX and Linux operating systems, DirectSecure provides optional encryption of data-in-motion to address audit requirements and protect intellectual property, without requiring changes to applications or network topology. This makes DirectSecure the most secure, adaptive solution for dynamic IT environments that include distributed networks, virtualized platforms and cloud computing.

A Key Component of the Centrify Suite

Centrify DirectSecure is a component in the Centrify Suite 2010 (for more information, see related press release, “Centrify Suite 2010 Expands Ability to Ensure Higher Levels of Trust, Control and Compliance in the Data Center”). The Centrify Suite 2010 is an integrated family of Active Directory-based auditing, access control and identity management solutions that secure cross-platform environments of UNIX, Linux and Mac systems, workstations, Microsoft systems and applications. Centrify DirectSecure builds on top of the Centrify DirectControl architecture, which provides the ability to join a non-Microsoft system to Active Directory, thereby facilitating the ability for a UNIX or Linux system to obtain a Kerberos ticket or, with DirectSecure installed, to obtain a PKI certificate. DirectControl also provides the cross-platform Group Policy engine that DirectSecure leverages to apply end-point authentication policies. Other complementary solutions in the Centrify Suite include DirectAuthorize, which provides granular role-based security; DirectAudit, which provides user-level auditing of non-Microsoft systems: and DirectManage, which centralizes the discovery, management and user administration of UNIX and Linux systems.

Organizations use Centrify Suite to enforce consistent security policies and protect against security breaches from inside and outside threat; to meet compliance requirements by controlling access and auditing all privileged user activity; to increase operational efficiency of IT staff by delivering a single tool to administer user access across heterogeneous systems and reduce calls for password resets; and to improve end-user productivity by decreasing the number of login IDs across heterogeneous systems and applications.

Availability

DirectSecure is licensed as a component in the Centrify Suite 2010 Platinum Edition and is now available from Centrify and worldwide reseller partners for computer end-point authentication leveraging Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and pre-shared keys (PSK). Computer end-point authentication leveraging Kerberos and support for Microsoft DirectAccess is available under the Centrify early access program.

About Centrify

Centrify enables organizations to reduce IT expenses, strengthen security and enhance compliance by centrally securing their cross-platform data centers through Active Directory-based identity and access management. By leveraging Active Directory, organizations have a cost-effective solution for authentication, access control, role-based privilege management, user-level auditing and server protection for heterogeneous systems, hypervisors and applications. Built on a common architecture, the seamlessly integrated Centrify Suite – DirectControl, DirectAuthorize, DirectAudit, DirectSecure and DirectManage – has been chosen by over 1,500 enterprise customers worldwide for its quick-to-deploy, easy-to-manage next-generation technology. In this blog post I will give an overview of DirectAccess and discuss how Centrify DirectSecure embraces and extends it to non-Microsoft platforms; i.e. even better together.

[Many thanks to our CTO Paul Moore for helping me on this blog post.]

DirectAccess is new technology in Windows 7 that gives a mobile user an ‘always-on’ connection to corporate resources. The user has the same network experience when docked at his desk and when using a WI-FI connection in a hotel; it all just works. For example, say I am in a hotel room and I start Outlook, it will automatically connect me to the Exchange Server; if a piece of mail I receive has a link to one of our internal web sites then clicking on it will automatically connect me to the web server.

DirectAccess works by taking advantage of several new features that Microsoft added in the new network stack introduced in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista and enhanced for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. These include the ability to have the DNS client use different name servers for different domains, user level authentication in IPSec and a rich set of IPv4/IPv6 interoperation capabilities.

The DirectAccess Server runs on Windows Server 2008 R2 and the clients must be Windows 7. The backend systems can run Windows 2003 or Windows 2008; apart from the IPV6 requirements the DirectAccess setup is transparent to them.

One obvious question is how secure it is: the answer is ‘very’. The computer that the user uses to connect must be an Active Directory (“AD”) domain member and have a certificate issued by the domain. Secondly the user must be logged on to that computer using their domain user and password. Only if both these conditions are met will the DirectAccess server open a tunnel to the corporate network. The tunnel itself is protected via IPSec so that all data is encrypted (just like a normal VPN).

Notice also that the traffic works the other way too; management servers in the corporate network that need to connect to the user machine to perform housekeeping tasks can do so via DirectAccess even when the target machine is on the Internet.

DirectAccess also takes the IPsec deployment strategy called Server and Domain Isolation (“SDI”) to the next level. It is seamlessly integrated into the DirectAccess setup experience; the admin just checks a box saying “yes I want end to end encryption of data.” They can also choose to only allow certain machines access to those servers. This one wizard page replaces a very complex setup in older versions of Windows.

Where is this useful? Imagine I have a financial planning server and I want to ensure that all data flowing on the network to and from it is encrypted (even inside the corporate network , and I want to ensure that only a specific set of machine can access it: this is SDI. DirectAccess now allows that to work even though the permitted machines might be on the Internet; the data is always encrypted and only a specific set of machines may access the data.

[For more information, I found this article on the “10 things you need to know about DirectAccess” as providing a good introduction to DirectAccess.]

How does Centrify help?

As you would expect DirectAccess works great with an all Windows environment; but what happens if the back end services are hosted on non Windows systems? The answer is that things don’t work so well.

First, basic network connectivity. DirectAccess uses IPv6 extensively and so the corporate network must either be already running IPv6 (unlikely) or they must use an IPv4/v6 transition technology called ISATAP. ISATAP is transparent to the network itself but the hosts must support it and must be correctly configured.

Second, SDI. SDI is built on top of many Microsoft technologies, AD, Group Policy, Certificate server, etc. None of these are supported by non-Windows systems.

Centrify’s DirectSecure product delivers both the ISATAP and SDI support to a heterogeneous DirectAccess deployment. By building on the AD infrastructure provided by our flagship DirectControl product we deliver a seamless Group Policy-driven implementation of all the necessary building blocks.

What about UAG?

Microsoft’s Forefront Unified Access Gateway (acquired with the purchase of Whale Communications) can be deployed with DirectAccess. It changes a few things but does not impact the value that Centrify brings. If a customer deploys the NAT64 feature of UAG then the need for ISATAP disappears. The SDI piece stays basically the same.

Summary

The bottom line is that Centrify's DirectSecure product enables DirectAccess to securely communicate with UNIX and Linux systems via end-to-end (versus just end-to-edge) IPsec authentication and encryption of network traffic.

So this means that Bill Gate’s vision of “secure anywhere access” can now be extended to enterprise resources running on any platform (well ok, just the major modern UNIXes and Linuxes :-) via Centrify as well as more recent Windows OSes via Microsoft). In other words, even better together.

cross-platform systems and applications through Active Directory, today
announced availability of Centrify Express, a new set of free software
applications and tools, content resources and community forums designed
to help organizations improve security and compliance of data center and
desktop systems. A subset of the company's award-winning Centrify Suite
of identity and access management solutions (IAM), Centrify Express is
ideal for organizations interested in establishing a single sign-on
experience for Linux and Mac users based on their existing Active
Directory credentials. To download the free software, visit www.centrify.com/express.

"We are very proud of the large and growing ecosystem of partners
such as Centrify who have chosen interoperability with Canonical for
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS," says Matt Asay, COO, Canonical. "With the free
Centrify Express offering, organizations of all shapes and sizes can
quickly and easily integrate desktops and servers running Ubuntu 10.04
LTS with Active Directory."

Gartner's 2010 CIO Survey
places identity management as the number one IT security priority
through 2011. The potential misuse of shared credentials by insiders is
leading IT managers to focus on ensuring authentication to key internal
and cloud-based systems to eliminate unauthorized access. In a climate
where budgets are still tight amid multiple competing priorities,
Centrify Express represents a cost-effective solution for ensuring
authorized access by requiring users to log in as themselves rather than
using shared accounts or account credentials that are difficult to map
back to a specific individual. And Centrify Express delivers this
capability by letting organizations both big and small leverage an
existing infrastructure they have already deployed — Microsoft Active
Directory — to secure their heterogeneous computing environment.

Centrify Express comprises:

DirectControl Express. Enables Linux and Mac OS X
servers and workstations to participate in a Windows Active Directory
domain and gives users Active Directory-based single sign-on.

DirectManage Express. Automates deployment and
management activities by providing a central solution to discover
non-Windows systems on a network; assess and validate the system's
ability to join Active Directory; download the right packages for
systems; and automatically deploy software to join systems to Active
Directory — all from one easy-to-use graphical management tool.

Centrify-Enabled Open Source Tools and Utilities.
Allows for cross-platform connectivity and file sharing with
Centrify-enabled versions of OpenSSH, PuTTY and Samba that have been
enhanced and tested to seamlessly work with Active Directory and support
Kerberos while delivered as easy-to-install pre-compiled packages.

Centrify Express Community: A full open community,
moderated by Centrify technical experts and customers, to support
learning, collaboration and best-practice development in support of
single sign-on and related security and compliance initiatives,
featuring forums, how-to videos, best-practice guides and more.

Centrify Express is a subset of the capabilities provided by the
Centrify Suite that layers on additional capabilities such as Group
Policy, role-based access control as an industrial strength replacement
of sudo, privileged identity management, user-level auditing, server
isolation and encryption of data-in-motion. Centrify Express customers
can simply use Express for free or subsequently upgrade some or all of
their non-Microsoft systems to various editions of the Centrify Suite
that meet their needs.

"Cross-platform identity and access management solutions have
traditionally been too costly and complex for smaller to medium sized
businesses (SMBs), but they often have some of the same security and
compliance requirements such as PCI as larger organizations," said Frank
Cabri, vice president of marketing at Centrify. "Centrify's approach of
leveraging Active Directory combined with our free Express offering
will now allow those organizations to easily improve security and
compliance for their systems and layer on additional capabilities as
their business evolves."

Resources to Ensure Your Success

The Centrify Express program offers a comprehensive set of resources and support to ensure a successful experience, including:

Learn More >>

Organizations moving their IT resources to the cloud are finding it a
challenge to maintain the same security posture in their virtual
environments that they have adopted in their physical data centers.
Cloud platforms like VMware vCloud and Amazon EC2 enable the quick and
easy creation of servers in response to end-user demand. In such dynamic
environments, IT security and compliance managers need an automated
method for consistently provisioning user accounts and privileges and
enforcing system security policies. Other unique challenges include:
isolating groups of servers for compliance reasons, protecting data as

Organizations moving their IT resources to the cloud are finding it a
challenge to maintain the same security posture in their virtual
environments that they have adopted in their physical data centers.
Cloud platforms like VMware vCloud and Amazon EC2 enable the quick and
easy creation of servers in response to end-user demand. In such dynamic
environments, IT security and compliance managers need an automated
method for consistently provisioning user accounts and privileges and
enforcing system security policies. Other unique challenges include:
isolating groups of servers for compliance reasons, protecting data as
it moves across the public network, and auditing user activity on

IT environments comprised of disparate systems, databases and
applications. Using multiple identity stores (e.g., LDAP, NIS,
/etc/passwd, etc.) for UNIX/Linux and Mac systems and non-Microsoft
databases and web and enterprise applications makes it difficult to
prove to FISMA auditors that your information is secure.

In this complimentary webinar, David McNeely, Centrify Director
of Product Management, explains how Centrify's solutions provide a
powerful, cost-effective, standards-based way to address the four
key identity and access management provisions of FISMA in
distributed, cross-platform environments.

Topics Covered

The security and compliance challenges caused by fragmented
identity and access management within the distributed
environment

The advantages of centralizing identity and access management
on Active Directory

How Centrify addresses the core technical requirements of FISMA
as outlined in NIST Special Publication 800-53:

Access control

Audit and accountability

Configuration management

Identification and authentication

Featured Speaker

David McNeely, Director of Product Management, Centrify
Corporation

David works with customers to drive the roadmap for Centrify's
award-winning identity and access management solutions. David has
worked in the identity and access management market for over 16
years, holding various product marketing and management positions
at ActiveIdentity, AOL, iPlanet and Netscape. At Netscape and
iPlanet he was the director of product management for the Directory
and Security product line, where he first promoted the concept of a
centralized directory for all identity and access management.

great deal of time and money managing access to their web-based and
enterprise applications. Provisioning and de-provisioning users and
performing password resets drain help desk resources and affect
productivity and user satisfaction. Employee frustration increases
with the number of separate login credentials they need to
remember, and forgetting a password can idle them for hours or days
while waiting for an account reset to restore access to an
application.

Managing access to applications on non-Microsoft systems also
presents security risks. While the Active Directory account of an
exiting employee may be de-provisioned quickly to cut off access to
email and VPN, entitlements to intranets, HR or finance
applications, partner portals, and other applications may not be
disabled for hours, days - or ever.

Join this event to gain a better understanding of the advantages of
implementing web and enterprise application single sign-on. Learn
why tying web, enterprise and B2B applications entitlements to
Active Directory accounts is a simple, cost-effective, and highly
reliable method of addressing IT security best practices and
regulatory compliance.

Perry
Carpenter, Gartner Analyst will examine:

The security drivers and business challenges associated with
managing entitlements for web and enterprise applications in large,
heterogeneous environments.

How application access must be managed to meet regulatory
requirements and conform to best security practices.

The important role Active Directory can play as the central
identity store in complex, cross-platform environments.

Corey Williams, Centrify Director of Product Management
will describe:

Centrify DirectControl's Kerberos/LDAP support for intranet
single sign-on, and ADFS/SAML support for extranet single
sign-on.

How DirectControl leverages Active Directory infrastructure to
support web application platforms such as Apache, WebSphere,
WebLogic and JBoss, and ERP apps like SAP.

The benefits of centrally managing and enforcing passwords and
policies that enable single sign-on, including increased end-user
satisfaction and reduced helpdesk incidents.

How DirectControl provides a cost-effective solution to
identity federation in partner ecosystems.

You will also receive two complimentary white papers. One covers
SSO and Federation for Java/Web. The other covers SAP SSO on
UNIX/Linux.

Everyday, more and more of your users are adopting Macs as their
platform of choice, fully expecting support equal to their Windows
counterparts. You wish it were that simple. Compatibility of file
and print services, and client configuration and management are
just some of the challenges you must overcome. Perhaps the most
complex challenge is making CAC, PIV, and .NET smart cards work
when you need to meet strict security guidelines or are subject to
HSPD-12, which mandates two-factor authentication for workstations
in Federal agencies and those doing business with them.

Join David McNeely, Centrify Director of Product Management, for
this complimentary webinar where he'll describe how easy it is to
integrate Macs with smart cards into an Active Directory domain.
Best of all, he'll discuss how to do this using the resources you
already have - saving you time, money, and headaches.
Topics Covered

The advantages of centralizing identity and access management
on Active Directory in heterogeneous environments

How central enforcement of smart card login policies for users
of Mac systems improves your security posture

The security improvements, cost savings, and administrative
efficiencies that come from using the legacy directory

Centrify's compatibility with Common Access Cards (CAC),
Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards, and other cards that
support the Apple TokenD interface (e.g., Gemalto's .NET smart
card)
